Once collected, the capsules are shipped to a partner where they undergo a technological process, the first of its kind in Canada, which mechanically separates the coffee grounds from the aluminum. The aluminum is repurposed into various objects and the coffee grounds are transformed into a high-quality compost, used by farms, at no additional cost to citizens or municipalities.

Nespresso works closely with service providers to ensure that capsules collected are recycled. Nespresso audits service providers on a monthly basis to monitor the volume of recycled capsules.

Aluminum is the best material to protect the freshness, taste and quality of the Nespresso coffees, maintaining the high quality standard of the coffee from roasting to cup. It has a unique advantage of being infinitely recyclable and thanks to the robustness of aluminum, there is no need for additional packaging to protect the freshness and taste. Recycled aluminum is extremely versatile. An estimated 75% of all aluminum ever produced is still in use today, according to the European Aluminum Association.

Yes, however, Nespresso continues to offer this recycling service as a part of our commitment to environmental sustainability.

• Nespresso provides free recycling boxes and covers the cost of returning used Nespresso aluminium capsules.
• To register with the recycling program (first call), you will need to call 1 888 744-7123. Please ensure to have the following information at hand:

• Company name, company full address, delivery instructions, main contact number and hours of operation (to align best pick-up time). 
• A 4-digit locator number will be provided – please ensure to keep it for your future pick-ups. 

• Once the recycling box is full of used Nespresso capsules, customers have the option to schedule future pick-ups via Phone (1 888 744-7123) or via Chat on https://www.purolator.com/en. Three items will be required to schedule a pick-up: the 4-digit code locator number provided at registration, the 11-digit tracking number found on the right side of the box label and the hours of operation.
• As all Nespresso capsules are recyclable, we also encourage businesses to collect the used Nespresso aluminium capsules that employees can bring in from home, making it even easier to participate in recycling. 

• Nespresso has developed a bulk recycling initiative which will allow its Professional customers to recycle their used aluminium Nespresso capsules, as well as its employees and even members of the public in-home capsules. Both Professional capsules and in-home Nespresso capsules can be recycled together. 
• As part of the initiative, Nespresso provides free recycling boxes (small and large), which includes a box and liner to store the capsules and covers the cost of returning the used aluminium capsules. 
• Nespresso Professional customers can order a free recycling box online.  This bulk recycling program is only available to Nespresso Customers and Members for the recycling of aluminium capsules. 
• This bulk initiative is also available to workplaces and community locations that want to become a recycling point for Nespresso used aluminium capsules. A company can decide to provide a collection point to its employees.

  • Aluminium capsules that are recycled with Nespresso are sent to a specialist recycling plant. There, the aluminium is separated from the residual coffee. The coffee is then sent to a facility to be transformed into compost or for anaerobic digestion, while the aluminium is recycled and sent back to the aluminium industry to produce new aluminium products. 

• Prepare your box for collection by sealing the box liner and taping the lid of the box. Please make sure your box has a shipping label on it. 
• Arrange a pick-up by following the “Organize a pick-up” link above. 
• You have the option to schedule a pick-up via Phone (1 888 744-7123) or via Chat on purolator.com. Three items will be required to schedule a pick-up: the 4-digit code locator number provided at registration, the 11-digit tracking number found on the right side of the box label and your hours of operation (to align best pick-up times).
• A courier will arrive at the designated location to collect your box. Please ensure someone is in attendance for pick-up. 

The boxes come in two sizes: small with a 700 capsule capacity (17.78cm x 17.78cm x 45.72cm) and large with a 2500 capsule capacity (27.94cm x 27.94cm x 91.44cm).

The recycling box is made from cardboard. It has a sturdy structure and comes with plastic lining to prevent any leakage from used capsules. As well as the capsules, both the box and the plastic lining will be recycled or recovered as appropriate when they are returned to Nespresso.

The whole box, including the liner, is collected each time. Please seal the bag and tape the lid of the box for collection.
